Standards
The site is developed following standards including XHTML (Extensible HyperText Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), XML (Extensible mark-up language), XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language).
Other technologies used on the Their Past Your Future website include:
- SMIL: By implementing SMIL, text and audio transcriptions of the video files can be automatically synchronised with the visual tracks. This provides text and audio alternatives for users who require it, and through text transcriptions, allows video files to be searched. This was used for commemorative video clips on the site.
- P3P: By implementing P3P, visitors do not need to scour the site for information on privacy policies and data collection. Instead, key information about what data is collected by a web site can be automatically conveyed to a user, and discrepancies between a site’s practices and users’ preferences can be automatically flagged. For users who can browse websites less quickly, bringing this important information direct to the user can save time and frustration.
The TPYF website is implemented using the Amaxus Content Management System which is known for producing accessible sites.

Collections Online
In addition to the physical branches the museum also produces Collections Online - that offers access to material covering all aspects of twentieth century conflict. The site includes detailed catalogue information for over 160,000 items from the Imperial War Museum's collecting departments. And allows users to view images of over 30,000 highlights from the collection, including photographs, works of art, aircraft, vehicles and objects, and listen to selected 'soundbites' from the Sound Archive. The Imperial War Museum is also a major national art gallery, a national records archive and a research centre.
